How 'bout Something to Make Life Easier?

I thought I would take a minute to share with you our new product line and my thoughts on these new products. Shelf Reliance has always had the utmost concern for quality and nutrition as well as convenience. It is that concern that led them to develop this great line of entrees, soups and sides.

Introducing THRIVE Express!

THRIVE Express was developed with the help of Shelf Reliance's in-house chef, Chef Todd. THRIVE Express was created using the fantastic THRIVE products you already know and love and they're all-natural, which means no dyes.
I had the opportunity at Shelf Reliance Convention to try each of the 12 products in the new THRIVE line. Here's my take on each (I rated each product 1-10 with 10 being the best):

SOUPS

  • Baked Potato Cheese Soup- 5 year shelf life    $1.60/serving
This is a good soup, but to me it had a little bit of a funny after-taste. *I give it a 5 out of 10
  • Broccoli Cheese Soup- 5 year shelf life    $1.60/serving
Decent soup. I have to admit, I like our Broccoli Soup from our old entree line better. *I give it a 6 out of 10
  • Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup- 5 year shelf life    $1.60/serving
I'm quite particular about chicken noodle soup because my grandmother's homemade recipe is so delicious, so this one wasn't a hit with me. It was tasty, just not like grandma's. The other consultants I was with enjoyed it thoroughly. *I give it a 6 out of 10
  • Creamy Garden Vegetable Chowder- 5 year shelf life    $1.60/serving
I enjoyed this chowder. I think it could have had a few more chunks in it, so I plan to throw in some extra THRIVE veggies. *I give it an 8 out of 10
  • Hearty Chili with Beans- 5 year shelf life    $1.85/serving
This is a yummy chili. It's quite spicy though, so if your family isn't into spicy foods, this may not be for you. *I give it an 8 out of 10

SIDES

  • Chili Lime Chicken Rice- 5 year shelf life    $2.67/serving
This was a tasty dish. It would go great with a tossed green salad for a very inexpensive meal. *I give it an 8 out of 10
  • Loaded Scalloped Potatoes- 5 year shelf life    $2.33/serving
Again, I'm a little particular because I'm a cook-from-scratch kind of gal. Overall it was good for a pre-packaged meal. *I give it a 7 out of 10
  • Wild Rice Pilaf- 5 year shelf life    $1.15/serving
This was a pretty good rice. It's healthier than store-bought rice dishes, but I hate to admit when I don't make rice pilaf from my own recipe, there's a particular store-bought rice mix I prefer over the THRIVE Express version. *I give it a 6 out of 10

ENTREES

  • Creamy Beef and Noodles- 5 year shelf life    $2.47/serving
Better known as stroganoff, it's pretty tasty for a pre-packaged meal. *I give it a 7 out of 10
  • Garden Fresh Vegetable Pasta- 5 year shelf life    $2.56/serving
Not a favorite. In fact, there wasn't a consultant I talked to at Convention who liked it. *I give it a 2 out of 10
  • Pasta Carbonara- 5 year shelf life    $2.13/serving
This was my favorite. It's very fresh and light. *I give it a 9 out of 10
  • Southwest Style Chicken and Rice- 5 year shelf life    $1.85/serving
This entree was also quite tasty. It's another spicy one so again, if you have a family of sensitive palates, this might not be the one for you. *I give it an 8 out of 10

Overall, I think the new THRIVE Express line will be a great addition to your Home Store. The foods are healthy and easy to prepare, not to mention a whole lot cheaper than fast food at the drive-through.
I would recommend trying all the foods for yourself to see which ones your family likes best. Not everyone likes (or dislikes) the same things. The best option for trying all the new dishes would be to purchase the Variety 12-Pack. The Variety Pack comes with one pouch of each of the products in the line and is $84.99 (an average of $1.91/serving) for Q customers, or when you purchase directly through me. You may also purchase the 12-Pack from my Shelf Reliance website for $89.99 if you would prefer to place the order yourself.

A "Smart" way to Start Your Family's Long-Term Storage!

I'll first apologize for my absence over the last few weeks. I had the opportunity to attend Shelf Reliance's second annual Convention. I've been so overwhelmed by the fantastic experience and all the incredible information I received, that I've spent the last couple weeks trying to organize myself and my thoughts.
The first thing I'd like to share with you that was released at Convention is something absolutely fantastic!  The heads at Shelf Reliance home office are so in tune with you as their customers. Shelf Reliance realizes you are trying your hardest to prepare your families. They also realize you may not know what to do with the products you are bringing into your home. Because Shelf Reliance wants you and your family to be prepared in every aspect, they have come up with a plan to not only bring incredible long-term food storage products into your home, but to provide you with the tools and knowledge to use those products. I've Stored It...Now What? -Beans

When we think of "food storage" wheat is usually the first to come to mind, then beans. I thought it was only fitting then, that beans be the focus of our next installment of "I've Stored it, Now What?" Beans are one of those things we know we should store, but often have no idea what we're going to do with them when a disaster strikes or when we're forced to use them (like when it's time to rotate them).
So why store beans? Beans are incredibly inexpensive, cholesterol free and low in fat. They are also high in fiber, protein and carbohydrates. The Idaho Bean Commission, reports that “Each half-cup serving of dry beans provides six to seven grams of protein, meets at least 10% of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein, yet costs about 20 cents per serving.” "A single half-cup serving of cooked dry beans counts as one, one-ounce serving of lean meat in the USDA Food Pyramid Meat and Beans group, and as a full serving of vegetables in the Vegetables group." Pretty great huh?!
What kind of beans should you store? My suggestion, the kind your family will eat! I do not like Lima beans so I will not cook them (sorry kids you'll have to gain a love of Limas from someone else), let alone add them to my Home Store. Only store things you know how to, or a willing to learn how to cook and your family will eat. Even in a crisis when I'm very hungry, I am not going to enjoy eating Lima beans! Shelf Reliance offers seven different types of the traditional dry bean (Black, Kidney, Lima, Pinto, Red, Small White Navy and Lentils) and three types of instant dry beans (Black, Pinto and Red). What's the difference? Traditional dry beans require 4-16 hours to rehydrate (the longer they soak, the less cooking time they require); here are instructions on how to rehydrate dry beans. THRIVE Instant Beans require only 10-15 minutes of boiling.

THRIVE Dry Beans                                 versus                           THRIVE Instant Beans
4-16 hours to rehydrate                                                            10-15 minutes to rehydrate
Seven different bean varieties                                                  Three bean varieties
Averages about .23/serving                                                       Averages about .32/serving
30 yr shelf life/5 yrs opened                                                     25 yr shelf life/1 yr opened
Long rehydration time means can't eat when hungry                  Ready in a flash
The only question left I guess, is "What do I do with all these beans?" Everyday Food Storage has an e-cookbook available to purchase, Shelf Reliance offers a database full of fantastic recipes and I cook with the products here at THRIVEwiththebasics quite regularly. To give you some creative ways to use beans here's a recipe round-up:

Beans as an oil substitute in baking- Everyday Food Storage (I love this! Think of how much healthier your baked goods become!) And a recipe for Low-Fat Peanut Butter Chip Brownies

Five-Minute Creamy Chicken Enchilada Soup- Your Own Home Store

Homemade Refried Beans- Chef Todd @ Shelf Reliance

Ezekiel Bread- Food Storage Made Easy

I hope this gives you a really great start on working your way through your storage of beans. If you haven't been storing beans because your family doesn't eat them much, I hope you have a new-found respect for beans. They are incredibly versatile and sooo healthy!
